Core Objectives

Responsibility for managing the gardens and ensuring that all requisite tasks are completed to maintaining a well cared for garden.

 

You are responsible for a team which will carry out skilled gardening and general garden and maintenance work involved in all aspects of gardening. Your range of tasks includes managing your team for design and planning, planting and growing plants from seed, purchasing plants, managing pests and keeping the area generally well maintained.

 

Managing general garden maintenance and DIY for both the garden and garden area including basic carpentry and minor painting and decorating.

 

Regular checks and assessments for maintenance, health and safety and security and liaising with Line Manager, ensuring jobs are performed as and when they are required.

 

 

Main Tasks/Duties and Responsibilities  

 

 

Responsibility to staff and direct the team:

– to manage the overall day to day maintenance of all aspects of the garden and garden building such as sheds, greenhouses etc and managing the team who perform these roles.

– to plan rotas for planting and maintenance

– to manage and maintain agreed standards

– to manage and maintain general cleanliness in the garden area

– to manage and maintain gardening supplies

– to adhere to agreed budgets and maintain applicable quality standards and records

– for ensuring sufficient team members at all times and within agreed budgets

– quality control of all aspects of gardening including  health and safety

– assist your Line Manager

– meet your targets and those of the team as a whole

– contribute towards the smooth running of the of the organisation

– training and development of the gardening team

– adhere to statutory obligations and agreed quality and best practice guidelines

– understand all aspects of gardening services and management and train the gardening team to enable them to confidently deal with all aspects of their roles

– Manage organisation expectations and deal and resolve with all queries

 

Day to day responsibilities

manage the day to day running of all aspects of the gardening

day to day care and maintenance of gardens include insert as applicable e.g. orchard, herbaceous borders, cut flower border, vegetable garden with raised beds, fruit trees, fruit cages, rose garden,

day to day care and maintenance of hedging, including

day to day care and maintenance of the greenhouse

– to provide knowledge input and advice relating to all aspects of the garden including  pruning staking feeding and spraying.

– to carry out an agreed annual programme of maintenance work in order to maintain the garden to the agreed standard.

– undertake weekend watering duties as and when required

– regularly inspect any garden structures and undertaking minor repairs or advising line manager

– general garden carpentry such as assembling and maintaining furniture, replacing handles and similar hardware.

– general minor painting & decorating to maintain garden appearance

– carry out planned tasks in accordance with contract/agreed requirements

– carry out tasks within agreed time limits

– ensure compliance to  agreed codes, legislation, and procedures including health and safety

– maintain accurate records/documentation associated with your work

– report to Line Manager

-immediately report problems/failures that may impact on the organisation and/or its visitors, clients/customers to Line Manager

– meet your targets and contribute to those of the team as a whole

– contribute towards the smooth running of the team

– adhere to all organisation policies and procedures

 identify hazards, defects and the need for repair; to ensure compliance with agreed codes, law, working practices and health and safety

– allocate workloads to team members

– supervise, manage and direct the overall performance of the team

– subject to agreed criteria, recruitment, training, set action and targets, appraise and manage performance, development, coaching and general support of all gardening team members to ensure targets are met

– maintaining accurate records and accounts as required and reporting as agreed

– set an example for team members of commitment, work ethic and habits and personal character

– responsibly use resources and control expenses to operate within budgetary controls

– adhere to all organisation policies and procedures

 

From time to time you may be expected to be part of special projects as are reasonably required of

You are responsible for your allocated workload and must meet all targets as agreed with your Line Manager. You must contribute towards the smooth running of the organisation generally.

Hours

Your usual hours will be from 8am to 4pm. However you will be expected to work as and when is necessary to meet the needs of the team and your targets.

Insert following if applicable Your job will involve travel to sites within the agreed area. The agreed area is insert e.g. 20 mile radius, county etc

The role is part of the whole organisation team and as such requires you to perform such reasonable tasks that are required, as and when are necessary, to maintain, promote, develop and expand the business of our organisation and its interests generally.

You have responsibility for the other  Gardening  team members who will report directly to you

 

Equipment

You are responsible for the equipment provided to you for use in your job role. This means you must ensure that equipment is used in accordance with training provided, all of the organisation’s policies and procedures and the law and, where applicable, using any safety equipment or Personal Protective Equipment provided. You are responsible for ensuring that the equipment you use is maintained and can be used/operated at all times.

 

Essential Abilities/ Competencies of this job role

You need

– to have achieved the qualifications  insert as applicable e.g. NVQ2 in Amenity Horticulture (or an equivalent qualification)., PA1 and PA6 Spraying Certificates and a Chainsaw License, /D Horticulturist RHS General Certificate

– to hold the following additional certificates insert as applicable

– experience in this type of job role – insert as applicable e.g.   minimum 2 years

– requisite knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the trade

– practical knowledge of plants plus experience and using general garden machinery.

– to demonstrate knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations for this role

– skills in general gardening and maintenance

– able to share knowledge

– leadership with ability to drive and develop a team

– genuine desire to serve the needs of customers with a strong personal responsibility for achieving customer satisfaction

– excellent analytical, interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.

– high integrity and honesty in all dealings

–  project management skills

– to be friendly and approachable

– to understand and deliver good customer service

– good attention to detail

– ability to work under pressure

– a full driving licence

You need to have and maintain (with regular training and updates as necessary) the knowledge, technical skills and qualifications that are necessary to perform your job role to comply with the requirements of the Organisation and any applicable rules, regulations and with any law which applies to your job role.

Special Working Conditions

You may be expected to work in accordance with the organisation’s overtime policies

The nature of your role will require you to travel within the area that your team covers. However, from time to time you may be expected to travel outside that area as the job role requires.
