Short Bio:

Served 12 years in the Royal Air Force as engineering technician propulsion. Studied at Cardiff University and attained a Diploma in Environmental Studies. When leaving aircraft maintenance, studied with the Institute of Technical Authors attained a Diploma in Technical Writing. I have been a freelance technical author for 10 years and have work in the following areas Aerospace, Oil and Gas, Pressure sensing electronics, and sonar equipment. To accomplish the various tasks of a freelance I have travelled mainly around main land UK, but at the time of writing I am working in the UAE.

Employment History

October 2013 – Present Technical Author Emirates Airline Dubai UAE

Employed by Emirates airline in Dubai, to review the existing Maintenance Job Card format produced by the Maintenance Planning Department, review, then provide and implement a new format for commonality throughout the Emirates fleet of aircraft. The new format is also designed, where possible, to provide single sign-off capability for the Engineers and ensuring compliance is maintained. The Job Cards are produced on”Ultramain”. Progression of the new format involved meetings with various departments – Planning, Tech Records, Line & Base Engineering involving personnel up to Senior Vice President level to progress the ideas and achieve consenus. The project is a high visibilty project within the Emirates Engineering Department.

Create new installation manuals for MAN trucks armour plating, to the relevant Mil spec using MS Word.

November 2010-June 2013 Senior Technical Author, GE Energy (Sensing) Groby, Leicestershire

Creating new documentation for GE Sensing products, these include user manuals, maintenance manuals, and data cards for dispatch with products. Computer programs used are Framemaker+SGML, Word and CorelDraw. All illustrations are completed in CorelDraw. The writing standards used are AECMA S1000D, ATA100 and ATA 2200i these standards are used for the Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenburg manuals. Other duties include collating all the present technical documentation onto a database and collating and archiving obsolete manuals on to CD ROM. All technical information is gathered from consultation with engineers, engineering drawings and individual project meetings.

September 2010-November 2010 Technical Author, Rolls Royce, Derby, Derbyshire.

Technical author for Rolls Royce on the development of the new XWB manuals for Airbus. Tasked with researching, creating and formatting new technical documentation for Rolls Royce XWB engine. All manuals were written to AECMA S1000D standard and formatted accordingly.

March 2010–August 2010–Lead Technical Author, Sonardyne International Limited, Yateley, Hampshire.

Sonardyne’s only Technical Author on site. Tasked with creating and formatting new technical documentation and illustrations. New formatted documents are created in Microsoft Word and then configured to a PDF manual before transfer to a CD-ROM and shipment to the customer. All information is collated from liaising with each sonar system engineer and the engineering drawings. The manuals cover the areas that follow; description and operation, technical data, operating instructions, maintenance tasks, fault finding, removal and installation and repair tasks. Sonardyne Int Ltd design, manufacture and maintain all types of sonar equipment.

Update documentation, for Royal Saudi Navy Mine Sweepers Mid Life Update. (MLU). The MLU consists of writing new modifications, Technical Instructions and Operating and Overhaul Manuals. The new data is produced using a VAX system and Framemaker 8.

Amend existing aircraft technical publications. Compile and write new maintenance procedures for the Nimrod MRA4. Compiling new Aircrew Manual at present. Computer programs used are Framemaker 7.4 and Mercury4. Standards used are, AECMA 1000D, ATA100. The role also involves liaising with Design Engineers and the interpretation of aircraft technical drawings.

June 2007–March 2008–Technical Author, Britten–Norman, Isle of Wight (Full Security Clearance)

Amend existing aircraft technical publications. Compile and write new procedures for Islander BN2T and BN2T-4S e.g. Service Bulletins, Service Letters, Data Modules. Complied and wrote the new Aircrew Manual for the BN2T. Computer programs used are Framemaker+ SGML and Splitvision. Standards used are AECMA 1000D, ATA100. The role also involves liaising with customers, Design Engineers and the interpretation of aircraft technical drawings. Lead author working in partnership with Rolls Royce, M.O.D and H&S Aerospace, reviewing Rolls Royce aircraft engine manual, and writing and collating Britten Norman engine data modules. This is to provide continuity across all publications.

The role also involves liaising with customers, Design Engineers and the interpretation of aircraft technical drawings. All tasks have to be produced with strict time constraints, set by the team leaders.
