Professional Profile

Professional Construction Manager with 48 years’ experience in the industry. Spent the last 30 years in Senior Management / Executive positions. As Contracts Director for Murray and Roberts Civils I managed large to mega projects throughout Africa. Responsible for an annual turnover of R130 million P/A in 2001 with a staff compliment in excess of 50. Strong project and resource management capabilities; served on Bursary and Training Boards. CONSTRUCTION MANAGER

Responsibilities

• Overall construction Management of the Sishen West Expansion Project.

• Reporting directly to the Senior Project Manager.

• Directly managing 4 main Contractors: roads and earthworks, plate laying, signalling and power.

• Constructing rail, road, water pipelines, power lines and 2 electrical substations. Total Value Approximate value: R1, 2 billion.

• Effectively managing and coordinating various discipline Supervisors.

• Chairing weekly progress meetings with all the Contractors as well as 1 client meeting per month.

• Chairing daily team meetings.

• Continuously monitoring and managing the overall project schedule.

• Micro Managing via daily progress meetings with Contractors who slip on the schedule.

• Proactively managing all interfaces between various project contracts.

• Assessing all Contractor’s method statements and risk assessments in order to ensure safe working conditions.

Achievements

• Successfully jacked a major rail under rail culvert during an 11 day shut of Orex line.

• Successfully commissioned the 25km long Western Deviation Railway on time.

• Reduced the risk of delayed commissioning by initiating the restructuring of the main Contractor’s organ gram.

2. 2010 – 2012

SENIOR CONSTRUCTION MANAGER

Responsibilities

• Reporting directly to the Managing Director.

• Effectively managing a staff of 30+ people.

• Tendering for and supervising various roads (for SANRAL) and mining projects throughout RSA with a value of R600 million.

• Assessing and grading staff (assisting the Managing Director and the HR Manager).

• Assisting with the introduction of a new costing system.

Achievements

• Introduced staff assessments and grading.

• Successfully averted a R1 million loss by giving early warning to the client that the project was under budgeted.

3. 2008 – 2010

• Reporting directly to the Senior Project Manager.

• Supervising the construction of the rail infrastructure for the new iron ore mine at Sishen South (value: +/- R550 million).

• Directly managing 4 main Contractors: roads and earthworks, plate laying, signalling and OHTE (Overhead Track Equipment).

• Effective management and coordination of the various discipline Supervisors.

• Chairing weekly progress meetings with all the Contractors as well as 1 client meeting per month.

• Chairing daily team meetings.

• Continual monitoring and management of the overall project schedule.

• Proactively managing all interfaces between various project contracts.

• Assessing Contractor’s method statements and risk assessments in order to ensure safe working conditions.

Major Projects

Sishen South Rail:

• The Project involved the construction of a 17km railway including 2 major structures and 17 culverts as well as a loco maintenance shed. I also facilitated the construction of the load out station.

Achievements

• Accelerated the project by the introduction of sectional hand-over. This meant that the plate laying Contractor could start sooner.

• Overcame materials shortage for the formation by the introduction of drilling, blasting and crushing.

• Employed on a month-to-month basis by Sladden International Botswana to negotiate for and start up a village water supply project in North West Botswana and assisted the MD / Owner in the lodging of a contractual claim on another project.

• Employed on a month-to-month basis by Bovani Construction to assist the MD / Partner with tendering, cash flows and project management.

• Successfully managing projects in Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.

Major Projects

• Parts of the Trans-Kalahari in Botswana 260kms of road from Ghanzi to Sehitwa.

• Irrigation project in Tanzania. This involved a 17km river diversion, Head-works construction and canalisation over 17,000 hectares.

• Construction of a major road in Uganda.

• Emergency reopening of roads in Mozambique.

• Construction of sections of the N1, N3 and N2 toll roads in South Africa.
