CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Called to the Schlumberger ‘War Room’ to diagnose misfire of one of my drilling circulating tools operating on a deep water rig off the north west coast of Australia at a depth in excess of 4 kilometres. Via live data links, I liaised with on-site engineers and diagnosed improper use. I was immediately able to guide offshore engineers on how to operate the tool successfully while providing real time information to account managers and management who were on the phone and sitting with the client (Schlumberger’s largest) in other offices. Failure to solve the problem would have put the multi-million dollar contract in jeopardy.

Improved our supplier ranking with our largest client from 21st to 6th (out of 25) by managing the move from a small, inefficient workshop to a new, world class base. This necessitated coordinating workshop personnel, global hub, and local management. When I began the task, the current base had been criticised by clients and was deemed unsafe by upper management. I took the opportunity to create a layout in the new location that incorporated a lean flow around the workshop floor, reducing tool preparation time by hours and making the workshop far safer and more efficient. I received personal congratulations from local management and our segment also received praise from country level management for the new setup.

Using advanced torque and drag computer modelling software (just six months into a new position in Aberdeen), I produced a report warning of a potential catastrophic failure on a North Sea oil platform drill string. I predicted that if a proposed drill pipe was used, the drill string would buckle and I recommended a higher grade (more expensive) drill pipe. Due to the increased cost of my proposal, both the client and a more experienced engineer repeated the modelling, contradicting my results. In an effort to understand the discrepancy, I took the two contrary models and identified errors, enabling me to convince the client to accept my conclusions, thus avoiding drill string damage that would have caused several days of rig down time at US$1 million per day.
