My responsibilities at Danaher and Walsh lie in the realms of project delivery on site, with more of a management than an engineering focus. I am responsible for the management of direct and subcontract labour, materials and plant, organisation and planning of works, interface with clients, statutory undertakers, stakeholders etc., the management of health and safety risk, programme and financial reporting and the everyday running of site. Our works are predominantly in the realms Of Section 278 and general civil engineering.

Working on a variety of civil engineering projects I was responsible for both the project management and engineering activities on site at all levels, from procurement of materials, monthly financial reporting, day to day management of contractors and health and safety to being responsible for all setting out and engineering activities. I was site based and operated a hands-on approach where possible; getting directly involved in day to day activities – allowing me to monitor progress, quality and safety at a far greater level than can be achieved from a long-armed approach, and allowing me to learn details about construction processes which can be improved from the bottom up.

At National Grid my responsibilities lay mostly in the realms of the acting as the clients’ representative on site, enforcing CDM regulation, providing expert advice on issues unique to the power industry and monitoring of contractors RAMS and quality control measures through supervision of construction activities and scheme engagement throughout the investment process.

In addition to this I also returned to Aston University on a part time basis to study for an additional foundation degree in Power Systems Management, which I achieved with distinction.

After completing my degree and gaining employment with National Grid I worked again as an HGV technician before my start date with NG. I was the only HGV fitter employed within a larger workshop which carried out repair and maintenance on the entire council fleet of cars, motorcycles, minibuses etc. As such I managed the whole servicing and maintenance process for the entire council’s fleet of HGV’s and municipal vehicles, responsible for breakdowns, servicing, MOT and repairs, as well as managing parts ordering, scheduling and the collection and delivery of vehicles to meet timescales and cost.

After leaving school at 16 I completed an advanced modern apprenticeship as an HGV mechanic for Keltruck Ltd, a representative of Scania GB. After completion of the programme I went on to achieve all but two required courses to attain master technician status, as well as qualifications specialising in air conditioning, passenger carrying vehicle safety and auto electronics.
