This thesis investigated the current system of prehospital paramedic treatment protocols and compared them to national standards as well as other states. A mixed methods research method was utilized to make recommendations to the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services on how to improve their current protocols to best meet the needs of the citizens they served.

I started my fire service career as a Fire Service Explorer, an organization under the Knox Trail Council / Boy Scouts of America that provides an opportunity for training and experience in the fire service from the age of 14. I completed initial fire academy training and gained experience responding to various types of emergencies with the Northborough Fire Department. This enriching experience laid the foundation for my fire service career and my performance as an Explorer translated to a paid position as a Firefighter / EMT upon turning 18 years old.

Paramedic provider for a high call volume EMS system that provided 911 and critical care interfacility transport. Functioned as a field clinical preceptor for paramedic students and newly hired employees. Critical care skills include: initiation, titration and monitoring of advanced airways and ventilators, trained in chest tube placement, experienced in transport and maintenance of chest tubes, initiating IV pump infusions as well as titration of rates to patient conditions, cardiac monitoring, 12-lead ECG and electrical interventions, understanding lab values and titrating medications according to protocol and medical direction, trained in suture placement.

As a structural and Airport Rescue Firefighter (ARFF) with the Antarctic Fire Department the job function was to support the advancement of world science through fire/rescue and emergency medical support within the austere environment of Antarctica.
Based on Ross Island, the AFD provides the United States Antarctic Program with professional emergency services at McMurdo Station, Amundsen-Scott Station, and the United States Air Force airfields.
Antarctic Fire operations are performed where the most extreme environmental conditions on earth. Working in these conditions provided unique challenges and great experience adapting to and operating in an austere environment. Responsibilities include: emergency response, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, Hazmat, fire prevention, emergency dispatching, fire inspections and public education.

Paramedic provider for a high call volume EMS system that provided 911 and critical care interfacility transport. Average annual call volume of 16,000 calls between seven 24 hour trucks and one 8 hour Monday – Friday truck. The coverage area for this system is 443 square miles, two cities and a combined population of approximately 90,000. Extended transport times due to the large coverage area fostered advanced clinical experience with longer patient contact times. Responsibilities also included functioning as a field clinical preceptor for paramedic students and newly hired employees. Experience conducting Mass Casualty and Triage Management in full scale exercises including chemical warfare, airplane crashes and severe weather incidents.
