I have worked with the Platform Technology Solutions (PTS) organisation of Oracle since December 1996. PTS is part of Server Technologies, Oracle’s development organisation. PTS’s mission is to assist Oracle’s partners (ISV’s, SI’s and HW vendors) to make best use of the Oracle platform. It involves 2 main activities. Firstly, we build and deliver workshops to multiple partners. Over the last 3 years, I have been involved in building and presenting workshops on Oracle’s OBIEE, Endeca, Exalytics, Big Data, Webcenter Content and DB12C. Secondly, we undertake projects with partners. Projects are normally involve a small number of days onsite and a number of days remote support (the number varies by project). Projects split into 3 main types, Migration, Strategic Consulting and Technical Adoption.

Migration involves assisting the partner to move their application from a non Oracle platform to Oracle. This will involve scoping the work required, recommended architecture for the new application and technical assistance during the actual migration project. Strategic Consulting involves architecture support for the partner. Typically, this will be a review of the partners current application architecture, followed by an architecture report recommending changes to that architecture. Technical Adoption involves one to one training of the partner with a new piece of Oracle technology followed by assistance with fitting it into their application.

Over the past 3 years I have been involved with at least 150 projects spread reasonably evenly between the 3 main types. Some example projects are:

Working with a partner who produces CRM/HRM software. Originally based on SQL Server the partner wished to move the solution to Oracle. A scoping document was produced highlighting the work involved in the migration, an architecture document was produced showing how the Oracle products fitted into the partner application and assistance was given to the partner during the migration. The solution is now available.

I have worked with one of our banking partners since they started using Oracle. In 2010, I assisted them with a Benchmark on Oracle’s Exadata platform. The benchmark successfully achieved the required 6000TPS. I have visited a number of the partners, customers. In one case, the customer wished to migrate to the Oracle platform. I was involved in the initial discussions and during the migration POC they performed. In another case, the customer was having performance issues and I visited them to diagnose the problem and assist them to produce a solution. Over the last 2 years, the partner has been rearchitecting their application using JEE. I have assisted them in a number of projects to realize this.

I work with a partner in the Telco industry. Their application handles both Pay as you go and account based mobile phones. This requires both performance and high availability. The partner was having problems with rolling out a highly available solution to large customers. I performed a review of the current HA solution and recommended an alternative solution based on Oracle best practices. This is now being adopted.

I have worked with a partner in the betting industry. Their application is based on a non Oracle platform and they wish to move to Oracle. The first thing to do was to train the partner in the relevant parts of the Oracle technology. The partner decided, in consultation, to build a new solution based on Oracle technology. I then assisted them to develop a 3 year technology adoption plan.

I have recently been involved in reviewing the architecture on a partner application in the finance industry. High performance and availability is demanded by the application. The partner’s solution was struggling to achieve the required TPS. After a number of meetings, a report has been produced outlining the best architecture for the partners application.

I have assisted a large number of partners adopt OBIEE and/or Essbase into their applications. A typical project involved a large healthcare ISV who required a BI solution. They had some complex reporting requirements and needed to understand how best to integrate OBIEE into their solution, model their data to support their reporting needs and which tools to use to produce specific report types. A different project involved the use of OBIEE and Essbase in an integrated way within an ISV application.

In this position I was part of the enterprise architecture team reporting to the CTO. The project involved architecting their new mortgage system. As well as being involved in developing the business and technical architectures for this project, I introduced Oracle to the YBS and assisted with the commencement of their migration from legacy systems to Oracle. I introduced Oracle tools to the YBS such as Oracle Designer and Oracle Developer. As part of the implementation of Oracle Designer, I introduced their analysis methodology.

Whilst in this position, I was responsible for the development of KC&C’s manufacturing solution Excalibur built using Oracle Forms and the Oracle Database designed for Design for Build and Contract Manufacturing organisations. I was also responsible for the support of our legacy customers a number of shipbuilding companies. My management role which took about a third of my time involved helping with the day to day running of the company, budgetary control functions and managing the career progression of the 4 staff who worked for me. During my last 18 months with the company, I performed a consultancy role, as an Enterprise Architect for the local water company who were migrating from legacy systems to Oracle. This involved designing a common database for all their applications. Assisting with the evaluation of new software and then with the integration of this software with the common database architecture.
