Foreign workers ‘more skilled and motivated’

Employers are increasingly turning to workers from overseas, because they have a greater skillset and a higher level of motivation, it has been claimed.

An article in the Times said that more companies are realising the benefits of hiring manual workers from abroad, as these staff have the skills to carry out challenging tasks and often do so more efficiently than UK workers.

Bob Cotton, chief executive of the British Hospitality Association, said that the hotel and catering industry in particular has seen workers from Poland and eastern Europe fill jobs because they do not complain about working hours.

“One of the biggest problems is that we have millions of people claiming benefits. Some of these people would rather work fewer hours so they retain their benefits. Foreign workers are happy to work between 30 and 50 hours a week,” he said.

His comments come after Hikmet Ersek, Western Union chief operating officer, recently pointed out that more companies are realising the benefits of using foreign staff, as they are hard working and have the skills to carry out multiple tasks.
