Cobham Special Mission, formerly known as Surveillance Australia, provides aerial surveillance services under a long term contract to the Australian Customs & Border Protection Service. It is the largest civil maritime surveillance operation of its kind in the world. The company operates 10 Bombardier Dash 8 and two Reims F406 aircraft under this contract from bases in Cairns, Darwin, and Broome. These aircraft patrol Australian waters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in search of illegal activities.

Cobham Special Mission employs approximately 120 aircrew in three main bases- Cairns, Darwin and Broome. All aircrew (Pilots and Airborne Electronic Observers) are employed by Cobham. These crew are trained by both Cobham and Customs in all aspects of border protection operations.

Applicants should be aware that Cobham Special Mission operates in a highly dynamic environment, which can encompass short notice tasking changes at the client’s request. Rosters will include on-call, weekend and night flights; personnel should be prepared to deploy for extended periods. Cobham Special Mission manages all aircrew rosters under a Fatigue Risk Management System which is approved by CASA. During training there will be several assessments which must be passed. A candidate accepted for employment will undergo approximately 3 months of training.  Customs currency exams are held annually thereafter.

We offer an excellent remuneration package with base salary commencing at $70,161 pa for First Officers and remote area Location Allowance (Broome – $13,000 pa).


 Essential Eligibility & Selection Criteria

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be an Australian citizen (to enable application for Australian Government Security Clearance)
  • Hold a current passport
  • Hold a Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate
  • Be eligible for both an Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC) and an Australian Government Security Clearance. An extensive security process must be commenced after a successful interview and must be completed before course commencement.
  • 500 hours total flying experience (if below 1000 hours – will be deemed a “Low Hours Pilot” during training)
  • Hold an Australian Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) or Australian Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)
  • Hold a multi-engine Command Instrument Rating
Desirable Selection Criteria
  • More than 1000 hours total flying experience
  • Passes in Australian ATPL subjects
  • 200 hours multi-engine command
  • 500 hours pilot in command
  • > 70 hours pilot in command at night
  • Turbo prop experience
  • Computer literacy
