Reporting to the Chief Engineer,  the primary responsibility is to ensure the efficient and effective operation of all engineering aspects of the transport depot, meeting agreed targets set by the client and external bodies (i.e. DVSA, Transport for London(TfL), if applicable).

The client/company is only willing to recruit UK and European Union nationalities to these key positions. Fluency in English is expected.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Role:

People management

Directly responsible for the management of all engineering, stores and cleaning staff at the garage, including

• Ensuring staffing levels meet the Company targets and budgets at all times,

• Recruitment of suitably qualified engineering staff to the Company standards,

• Ensuring all engineering staff are trained to the required standard, and that accurate records of all training are maintained,

• Absence management of all engineering staff to meet and improve on KPI and budgetary targets,

• Performance management (including behavioural and technical) of all engineering staff. This includes, where necessary, conducting disciplinary hearings up to and including dismissal of staff,

• Ensuring all staff adhere to Company policies, procedures and formal Union agreements,

• Ensuring staff are paid accurately and on-time,

• Ensuring all relevant business information is communicated to and understood by all depot engineering staff,

• Ensuring communication and feedback from staff are considered, acted upon if appropriate and communicated back,

• Dealing with queries from staff

• Ensuring staff facilities are of a satisfactory standard.

Engineering Operations

Ensuring the garage engineering operation runs effectively, efficiently and meets Company targets, including: –

• Ensuring the maintenance, servicing and repair of Company vehicles meet and improve on the required Company and DVSA standards,

• Ensuring the maintenance, health and safety and environmental impact of Company premises meet and improve on the required Company standard,

• Ensuring Company vehicles, premises and equipment are tested, licensed, taxed, cleaned and operated in accordance with legal and Company requirements at all times, and, where applicable, to represent the Company before the Traffic Commissioner, Employment Tribunal or Court of Law,

• Ensure vehicle availability, reliability and presentation meet the required Company standard on a daily basis,

• Ensuring staff are utilised in the most cost efficient, effective manner,

• Ensuring holidays are managed and balanced to meet the operational needs of the business,

• Producing Period reports, and other reports as required, as requested,

• Ensuring all Company policies and procedures are adhered to at all times

• Ensuring all records are maintained for legal audit compliance,

• Conducting all required audits to ensure legal, Company and (if applicable) TfL compliance, and taking appropriate action to rectify problems,

• Communicating with all parties, internal and external to ensure the engineering operation runs efficiently and effectively,

• Liaising, managing and working with contractors efficiently and effectively to meet and improve on Company and statutory requirements.

Finance

Ensuring financial budgets and targets are met, including: –

• Formulating budgetary proposals and assisting with the annual budgeting process,

• Managing the engineering operation to ensure financial budgets (spend) and targets are met and improved on,

• Utilising the systems in place (i.e. Oracle) to ensure maximum operational and financial efficiency,

• Monitoring performance against budgets and taking remedial action where appropriate,

• Ensuring the purchasing and stores departments identify, order and deliver parts and materials at optimum price and quality,

• Observing Group purchasing contracts where applicable,

• Specifying and observing minimum stock levels, which are consistent with vehicle availability requirements,

• Monitoring local purchasing methods, stock control and security, and instigating amendments if necessary.

Health & Safety

Engineering Managers must ensure all premises, vehicles and garage staff adhere to the Health & Safety standards required by the Company and legislation, including:

• Ensuring staff are aware and trained to meet the Health & Safety standards required by the Company and legislation,

• Ensuring all facilities and premises meet Health & Safety requirements,

• Ensuring activities operate to legal and Company standards, e.g. Working Time Directive,

• Ensuring the safety of employees, sub-contractors and customers are not compromised,

• Promoting a safety culture amongst all employees,

• Conducting regular Health & Safety meetings with the garage Health & Safety reps,

• Actively seeking safer methods of working at all times.

As a Manager within the organisation you are responsible for ensuring that you are familiar with any health and safety risks and issues that are relevant to the work activities and areas for which you have responsibility and for ensuring compliance with legal requirements and the client’s policies.

As Engineering Manager you have a responsibility to co-operate with managers in ensuring that the workplace is safe for everyone by taking reasonable care not to do anything that might endanger you or others, either through your actions or lack of action, and never to act in a way that causes either you or or our client to be in breach of the law. You are expected to consider, and take account of, the potential hazards and risks in everything you do whilst you are at work.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

Essential:

• Relevant engineering qualification / s.

• Full UK driving licence, plus PCV licence.

Desirable

• Successful completion of a recognised apprenticeship scheme

Knowledge & Experience:

Essential

• Previous supervisory / people management experience,

• Solid understanding of Department of Transport / DVSA requirements

Desirable:

• Previous experience of the repair and maintenance of large vehicles (HGV / PCV),

Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to work under pressure

• Excellent organisational skills

• Task-orientated

• Ability to deliver consistently to defined targets

• Good communication skills, both verbal and written
