Short Bio:

Self motivated and versatile individual with over 20 years experience in Human Resources, inclusive of 15 years in the British Armed Forces. After reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant I decided to cut my career short to give much needed stability to my family. On leaving the military I was immediately employed as an Executive Assistant to cover a period of maternity leave followed by promotion and a permanent position as the HR Manager. Unfortunately due a wider Company re-organisation I was made redundant in April 2013. Married with two children and enjoys Golf, Skiing and Reading.

  • Plan, organise and coordinate all aspects of recruitment for hourly and salary paid staff including promotional recruitment fairs.  Provide refresher training, set up interview programmes, counsel managers and recommend changes when required.  Ensure all aspects of the recruitment process are carried out in accordance with company procedure and current legislation.
  • Maintain management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending HR policies and procedures and ensure compliance.

  • Review contract of employments in line with management structure, changes to legislation and company benefits.
  • Coordinate the existing appraisal process for all salaried staff, develop a new Interim Review process and ensure all staff are trained and adhere to Company procedure and timeframe.
  • Maintain employee benefits program; process benefit applications, claims, obtaining and evaluating benefit contract bids.  Coordinated the implementation of a new Group Pension Plan to ensure compliance with changes to legislation and Company requirements.  Review and issue yearly employee benefit statements to all staff.

  • Responsibilities include maintaining the diary for the company directors, organising all travel and itinerary matters.
  • Organising the administration for Recruitment and Sales training, Company Annual Management Conference and various functions throughout the period.

  • Full analyses of all Executive Assistant and Administrative Assistant duties, followed by a complete redistribution of duties.

Employed as the Military Personal Assistant within the Communications Division, NATO Joint Warfare Centre, Norway.

  • Maintaining the Division Head diary and organising all travel and itinerary matters.
  • Administering the group mailbox and ensuring mail is distributed electronically to the correct individuals.
    • Travel Fund Manager and the Assistant Divisional Fund Manager; administer all NATO financial transactions on the Eyeshare system, and attend Fund Manager meetings.
    • Create and review policy documents for department heads.
    • Coordinate conference room booking requirements.
    • Represent the division during HR policy change management meetings, JWC Webmaster and Permission user group meetings, drafting reply documents.
    • Responsible for upkeep of divisional files and library, and maintain Divisional Documents: Emergency Recall Rosters, Staff and Social Lists, Evaluation Checklist, Leave and Overtime records for staff members.
      • Additional to the above, I was responsible as Divisional Document Control Officer, Property Accounting Officer, Environmental Health and Safety Officer, Zone Control Officer and overseeing the working conditions within the Division.  Planning and coordination social events for the division.

 Human Resources Manager, Manpower Personnel, NATO, Norway                          Jun 08 to Nov 10

Accountable for all Human Resource aspects within the Military Personnel Office, Manpower Personnel Branch, NATO Joint Warfare Centre, Norway.

  • Primary duties included personnel management and administration of 400 individuals assigned to the NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) Stavanger, Norway.  Ensuring personnel were administered correctly and in accordance with the NATO Supplementary Agreement.
  • Worked closely with internal Legal branch and Norwegian government members to ensure compliance with specific country Memorandum of Understandings.
  • Create and review policy documents for department heads.
    • Liaised with other NATO organisations to ensure the Peacetime Establishment was administered in accordance with legislation.
    • Other responsibilities; providing manpower statistics, administering the deployment plans, chart analysis and provision of International evaluation reports for all military personnel.
    • Additional to the main responsibilities, I covered the duties of Personal Assistant for the Division Chief in periods of absence, the Assistant Security Officer and Fund Manager for the Division.

Key Achievements

Deputising for the Head Military Personnel during a 6-month deployment to Afghanistan and also performed duties of Chief Manpower and Personnel due to the post being gapped. Both these appointments were 5 and 6 grade levels above my rank.

To assist with the change and implementation of the Peacetime Establishment I produced a bespoke manpower matrix, which is now used by all Headquarter hierarchy, for this work I received a commendation from the NATO Commander.

Personal Assistant, 1 NATO Signal Battalion, Netherlands                                  Feb 08 to Jun 08

Prior to moving to Norway on promotion, I spent a short period of time as the Personal Assistant to the Commanding Officer.

  • Responsible for coordinating all administration and travel arrangements for the Commanding Officer.
  • Accountable for career evaluation reports and personal development plans for all military personnel within the Battalion.
  • Overall responsible for the management of all registry staff, overseeing the supervision of the library, document handling, destruction and filing system both electronic and conventional.
  • Financial claims auditor.

Key Achievements

Successfully organised all administration aspects for International VIP’s visiting the Battalion.

Staff Support Assistant, 2 Logistic Support Regiment, Germany                         Jan 05 to Feb 08

Employed as Staff Support Assistant within the Regimental Headquarters.

  • Primarily responsible for the Discipline procedures for 650 military personnel.  This involved liaising with both Military and Civilian Legal Authorities, ensuring discipline paperwork and procedures were administered accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Coordinating and administering career evaluation reports for military personnel, VIP visits, document handling, best practise guides, library and archive management. Ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act.  Coordinated the delaminating process for the military computer systems.  Further duties included management of stationery and travel budgets, branch Zone Control Officer, SHEF advisor (Safety Health Environment and Fire) and the Equal Opportunities Officer
  • In addition, responsible for all matters relating to maternity (Military & Civilian) and the Treasurer for the Regimental Sergeants Mess Fund

Key Achievements

Identified shortfalls in the Regimental Discipline system, to that end a closer working relationship with legal authorities followed.  Participated in a Charity cycle ride from London to Paris, raising a substantial sum a UK Children’s Hospital, organised and coordinated all fund raising and logistical arrangement for the event.

Worked in Human Resources at the following military posts; Headquarters Land Command, England. 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, Germany.  Special Forces Parachute Medics, Aldershot.  In additional, worked as a Stenographer and Personal Assistant for the Chief of Defence Staff, Ministry of Defence, London.

Early Civilian Career

After leaving school I worked in the advertising department of The Dumfriesshire Newspaper Group, followed by a junior management position for a local insurance company.  In addition, I volunteered my services as a Special Police Constable for the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary.
