Short Bio:

An Australian national living in the Thrace region of Western Turkey. Have been involved with the Tourism industry since 1988. My wife is Turkish and I have dual citizenship. Fell in love with this region when first visiting in 1984, became a tour leader for Imaginative Traveller UK in 1997 and managed groups in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt and India until my promotion in 2001 to Destination Manager SE Asia for Imaginative Traveller UK. Oversaw all operations of travel management in the region until 2009. Returned to Turkey and consulted as GM for two local firms before returning to Thailand as DOO for Khiri Travel. Now developing business for my own small agency.

Skills Summary

Currently developing inbound business for a small limited partnership travel agency located in Istanbul Turkey. I am one of the founding partners. The company Experta Travel and Events, www.experta.com.tr is completely self-sufficient so I am looking for gainful employment around the Thrace region in the travel industry.

I returned from Thailand where I headed up the operations department for Khiri Travel, a well respected and long established Destination Management Company (DMC) in Thailand. Khiri Travel have satellite offices and teams throughout the region and are innovative and evolving all the time.

Since leaving Imaginative Traveller I have held two roles here in Istanbul, both of them GM positions within the successful companies owned and operated by close friends. I was the Destination or Regional manager for Imaginative Traveller in South East Asia since February 2001. Responsible for all operations and manage a team of upto 28 foreign and local employees. Have recommended and implemented several programs and projects in CBT and Responsible Travel. Maintained a great working relationship with my team and my UK based Operations management and with my various suppliers throughout the region. I have built the SE Asian operations up from nothing to being the most successful region of our business. Since leaving South East Asia in 2009 I returned to my wife’s birthplace Turkey, where I was the General Manager of a long time friend’s travel business in Istanbul. I later became the GM for an exciting adventure group travel company based in Turkey before resuming a high level management position back in Thailand for Khiri Travel. This role is the culmination of all my skills and experience.

Business Development role with Experta Travel and Events. Founding but limited partnership.

February 2011 until January 2013 – Director of Operations (General) Khiri Travel.

Have been located back in Bangkok now for nearly two years. This role has changed and varied several times during my tenure. The directors are passionate and dedicated and very successful. I personally manage a team of 3 managers and around 20 staff. My team consists of Reservations, Customer Relations Unit and Flight Unit.

General Manager (Consulting) – Fez Travel Istanbul Turkey.

I watched this company grow from it’s very first days of operations back in 1997. Initially Turkey’s one and only Hop On Hop Off company it has expanded it’s operations throughout Turkey and Greece and now focuses more on set series group departures. As the GM of Fez I am involved once again in all facets of the operation from hiring and recruitment, brochure production, marketing, hotel and supplier negotiations and contracting, advising all departments on ways to rationalise resources and improve working systems.

General Manager (Consulting) – Road Runner Travel Istanbul Turkey

Joined this successful travel business in Istanbul Turkey in January 2010. Employed as the General Manager. Handling all aspects of his business including internet marketing, product development, staff training. All international communications and network development.

Destination Manager South East Asia. Imaginative Traveller UK

Managed all facets of the operation of adventure travel programs in South East Asia for Imaginative Traveller.

In charge overall for recruitment and training of both foreign and local staff.

Managing and inspiring a well trained and enthusiastic team of tour leaders/managers and staff.

Risk assessments and health and safety audits carried out in country and signed off by myself. Ensuring a safe environment for clients and staff.

Responsible for all accounts and expenditure within the region. Ensuring that all efforts are made to maximize revenue and manage resources.

Have been personally responsible in development and implementation of several Responsible travel programs and projects. Particular emphasis paid to development and sustainability and CBT (Community Based Tourism) throughout the region.

Inspection of hotels and properties used in our operations throughout South East Asia. Negotiations with suppliers of accommodation, activities, transport, guides, staffing and logistics in general on costs and quality of their product.

Development of new and exciting programs each year for our Worldwide Brochure. Researching and developing such programs, preparation of itineraries, costings, layouts and supplementary information.

Successfully operated tour groups of varying sizes in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and India.

Specialised in leading tours, developing new programs in Eastern and Western Turkey and Syria.

Research and development of new programs and Responsible Travel projects and programs.

Occupational Health and Safety Officer for the State Transport Authority for the State of Victoria, Australia January 1987 to May 1988

Investigated industrial accidents involving employees of the Victorian Government’s Tramway and Train system.

Recommended and implemented various improvements on the system. Including the overhaul of first-aid services and equipment

Coach Painter – Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board February 1977 to January 1987

Began an apprenticeship as a highly specialized Coach Painter utilizing very old methods of painting used in the restoration of vintage and antique trams used on Melbourne streets.
