Design and Build Contract (CP-26) for the construction of the world’s largest Aircraft Maintenance Hangar in the New Doha International Airport

Nov.’08 – Aug.’10: Site Mechanical Engineer
  • Supervision and set-up of the temporary site construction facilities (site offices, field offices, lay down area, stores, plant/equipment workshop, labor camp).
  • Leading a team of 2 superintendents with 40 labors. Responsible for the construction of the underground HDPE (butt fusion) networks (sanitary-storm drainage, water supply and fire fighting). Installation of pipes, valves, hydrants and hydro testing before backfill. Coordination with civil department (for related earthworks and manholes) and other contractors for the interface points.
  • Cooperation with senior mechanical engineer for the installation of underground networks (GRP and GRE piping).
  • Subcontractors’ supervision, performance monitoring and interfacing for resolving construction-related issues and ensuring work is executed as per engineering specifications and on schedule.
  • Supervision of the installation of embedded items for the special equipment (access doors and pop-up pit frames). Coordination with concrete specialist and land surveyors for the accurate and correct placement.
  • Responsible for part of the underground chill water network installation (black steel pipes / welding).
  • Responsible for and leading a team of 8 superintendents and 200 technicians for the HVAC works including: Single wall spiral and rectangular G.I. ducts insulation, pre-insulated and field insulated G.I ducts installation with related items and accessories (VCDs, VAVs, fire dampers etc.), Fans installation, chill water network pipes fit-up and welding/grooving or threading, valves installation and pipes insulation, hydro testing, Refrigerant copper pipes brazing, insulation and installation.
  • Organizing and coordinating third party inspections for the HVAC works and technical training for the site personnel.
  • Arranging all site inspections and coordination with the consultant’s engineers for the HVAC works making sure the quality requirements are met to the full.
  • Preparation of daily and weekly progress reports, productivity reports and construction schedule updates.
  • Preparation of red line drawings (as-built).
  • Developing man-hour estimates/ manpower loading plans and tools – equipment purchasing plan.
  • Ensuring HSE requirements are being implemented.
Sept.’07 – Nov.’08: Technical Office Mechanical Engineer
  • Engineering review of drawings and specifications for compliance to relevant codes and standards.
  • Tracing and identification of problematic points and comments submission to the designer for the 4 phases of the design process before final submission to the consultant. Design value engineering.
  • Supervision of the design coordination of all the underground services inside the building (coordination of 2 teams of engineers from 7 countries). Incorporation of the underground networks to the building’s foundations through sleeves and penetrations. Resolution of all the coordination problems of the external networks (sanitary and storm drain, contaminated water, water supply, fire fighting, compressed air, chill water, electrical and telecommunication ductbanks) and the interfaces with other contractors. Managed to minimize the excavations’ depth and length, and the quantity of material needed through optimization of the design and value engineering.
  • Market research for the piping material (plumbing, compressed air, drainage, chill water) and major HVAC equipment (Air Handling Units). Preparation of comparison statements for the final suppliers’ selection.
  • Preparation of material submittals.
  • Preparation of purchase requisitions for the piping material and order placement.
  • Preparation of the basis for the Material Tracking System (MTS) and the submissions schedule.
  • Preparation of Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Shop Drawings for the piping networks (water supply, sewage, fire fighting) of the temporary facilities (Site Offices, Field Offices, Labor Camp for 2000 people).
  • Preparation of Method Statements, Risk Assessments, Inspection-Test Plans and Shop Drawings for part of the mechanical services of the project.
  • ESP calculations for part of the ducting network (18 Air Handling Units).
  • Take offs for piping material (G.I., copper, cast iron, black steel, UPVC, HDPE, GRE, GRP, stainless steel) and accessories, fittings, valves, HVAC material and accessories (VAV, VCD, Fire Dampers, Fire Smoke Dampers).
