References need to be current and on a company letterhead. If they are less than 12 months old and aid your application there is no harm in sending them but it is not absolutely essential. What is more important is to have your future referees onside to respond promptly when reference requests are required.
These days most references are taken up by email so you need to warn your referees in advance that they will be contacted shortly if you succeed in getting a new job
